March's Goddess: Demeter
The Goddess of Nourishment, Sacred Care & Growth Cycles
She arrives quietly.
No thunder, no drama, just the smell of warm soil after rain and the sudden sense that something is ready to grow. That’s how Demeter shows up. Not with a grand entrance, but with a gentle and unmistakable presence that says: it’s time.
Welcome to March, the month we work with Demeter, goddess of the grain, keeper of cycles, sacred mother of nourishment and growth. She has been waiting for you, right here at the threshold of spring.
Who Is She?
Demeter is one of the oldest goddesses in the Greek tradition, a great mother figure who predates much of the mythology we know, rooted in an even older reverence for the earth itself. She governs the cycles of planting, tending, harvest, and rest. She is the reason the grain grows and the reason winter comes.
Most of us know her story through her daughter, Persephone, who was taken (or ventured) into the underworld, and Demeter’s grief was so profound that the earth stopped growing. She didn’t just weep. She withdrew. She refused to nourish the world until what was hers was returned.
That is the part of Demeter we don’t talk about enough. She understood something essential: that endless giving without tending yourself leads only to barrenness. Her grief was not weakness; it was wisdom. It was a mother who finally said, not like this.
This is the Demeter we’re working with this month. Not just the soft, generous giver, but the one who knows the difference between nourishment and depletion. The one who tends herself so she can tend everything else.
Why Her? Why Now?
March is a liminal month. The days are lengthening, but winter hasn’t fully let go. Something in us is waking up: creative energy, ambition, desire. But it’s tender. It hasn’t found its legs yet.
This is precisely where Demeter is most potent. She doesn’t rush the seed. She prepares the soil. She asks: What conditions will actually allow this thing to grow?
If January was about finding your inner spark again, and February was about reconnecting with desire and self-worth, then March is the month to ask the real question:
What will actually feed what’s growing in me?
Not what you think you should be doing. Not the productive version of growth. But what your body, your spirit, and your creativity are genuinely asking for right now.
The Question She’s Asking You
Demeter’s invitation for this month is simple, and a little uncomfortable for those of us who are better at giving than receiving:
Where are you over-giving? And what would it mean to nourish yourself with the same devotion you offer everyone else?
Sit with that. You don’t have to answer it yet. Just let it land.
